I think, rather than struggle for blog content this week... and the next few... I will give myself a break. I may or may not be back in November. That will depend whether I attempt Nanowrimo this year. Feel free to re-read your favourite old posts until I get back to posting new content.
Settings are probably the main reason the majority of my work is either science fiction or fantasy. I hate setting fiction in real world places. Also why I don't tend to write non-fiction outside of periodic (and unpublishable) attempts at an autobiography. Don't count on that ever seeing the light of day.
But, so far as settings go... A lot of it is a question of what is required for the characters and the plot of the story. Especially when it comes to the level of detail. I have settings that I know in a fair bit of detail and some I know only very generally. Some, especially short pieces, don't need much work in terms of setting. Others require building whole worlds, but I will address world building in a separate post. My other thing with settings is a question of how much detail do I really need to use to describe them. Again, it varies, depending what's going on in the story. Sometimes things in the setting are important to the plot, sometimes they just aren't. That said, characters and plots can't operate in a complete vacuum. Every story needs some kind of setting and it can take some thought as to what is appropriate and in what amount of detail. I've been on the fence for a while regarding what kinds of things to post here. So, I have a question for those who do read my posts:
Would you like to see more of my writing? Or Would you like to see me post about my writing process and my take on various related topics? Or Would you like a balance of the two? Let me know in the comments. Thank you. Real world update post for today.
It's a brand new calendar year and I'm fresh off holidays where things went to sh!t and I ended up sick. No, it was not restful. But, here I am, trying to figure out whether I'm going to get anything productive done this year. Also, waiting to see if my publisher can line up enough ducks to start getting books out again. We'll see. Last year's Goodreads Reading Challenge goal was 35. I managed to read 7. This year's goal is currently set at 12. Part of my problem is I spend so much time reading things that aren't in Goodreads' database, for varying reasons, that I rarely feel like reading anything that is. And anything I am currently reading, I am reading very, very slowly. I am, once again, planning to attempt Camp Nano and Nanowrimo. Let's see how well that works out this year. Hopefully better than last year. Otherwise, I'm working on about the same writing, editing, and typing out projects I was before the winter break. I will try to remember to post daily(ish) updates on those over on my FB page. Happy New Year all. May this year bring you good things. Yes, I know. I disappeared again. And I'm going to disappear once more for at least another month after I post this. Just to update my readers on a couple things:
Yes, I attempted Nanowrimo. No, I didn't win. It's been one of those months. No, I don't have anything new coming out in the foreseeable future. See howlingwolfbooks.ca for their updates and what's going on. I am still writing. Because I'm always writing. And I have things in the editing process. And I'm revisiting some really, really old work. No idea what will happen with any of it. It's just what I can concentrate on to work on. So, have a wonderful winter break and may your holidays be happy. See you in 2023. |
